Dr. Mel Borins is excited to announce the latest CME program that he and his wife Bonnie will be leading to South Africa in February 2017.
I am delighted to inform you that the Professional Development Program Awards Committee awarded our “Five Weekend Program in Counselling and Psychotherapy in Family Medicine” the 2015-2016 Professional Development Program Award in the category of Excellence in Continuing Education in recognition of our outstanding contributions to the Professional Development Program in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Dr. Mel Borins has been the Course Director of this course since 1997 and we have trained hundreds of family physicians.
I’m looking forward to being at the North York Central Library on March 2nd, 2016 where I’ll be discussing which alternative treatments work, which don’t and, according to the latest scientific research, why. As the flyer says “this presentation will be of interest both to skeptics about alternative medicine looking for hard evidence and to those who are open to alternative medicine but want to understand its benefits and dangers.”
As some of you are probably aware, I have always had a real passion for travel. I have been fortunate over the years to travel in both a professional and personal capacity to many varied and interesting parts of the world. Bali has always been one of my favorite places to visit and I have already traveled there on numerous occasions to investigate traditional healing approaches including previous programs which I have led to the island in 2012 and 2015 in collaboration with Doctors-on-Tour. After the success of these, and my previous ventures with Doctors-on-Tour to Ecuador & the Galapagos, Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos and both North and South India, I am excited to lead another educational escape to Bali in April 2016 and to introduce many of you first hand to this destination and it’s fascinating culture.

I was recently in conversation with Chris Vandercook for his show “The Conversation” on HPR-2 Talk Radio discussing alternative medicine and my book A Doctor’s Guide to Alternative Medicine – What Works, What Doesn’t, and Why.
Canadians don’t need any prompting to understand the wisdom of going south in the winter and like all good “snowbirds,” what goes south, must return north. Now picture a vast flock of cranes on the way to their northern home. For five weeks every March, as winter draws to a close, the banks of the Platte River become their resting and feeding place enroute to northern nesting grounds. Every year hundreds of birders, naturalists and the occasional curious Canadian doctor, flock there to experience America’s greatest migration.

There, now you know for sure that Mel Borins has a sense of humor. It’s refreshing to know that as you open A Doctor’s Guide To Alternative Medicine, which discusses “from stem to gudgeon” the sometimes controversial topic of alternative and complementary medicine. Research can be a dry subject, Mel admits; “I may not be able to give thrilling scenes of sex and car chases, but I do include historical background, curious folklore, and patients anecdotal reports which will provide some entertainment as you become increasingly familiarized and comfortable with the language and methods of science”.
Yes, he does!
Grief and loss are commonly encountered in family practice. Patients grieve the loss of loved ones, jobs, marriages, pets and even physical or psychological functioning. Patients may mourn the loss of their good health and seek comfort, understanding, respect, and especially hope.
I was recently in conversation with Dr. Michelle for her show “On the Couch” on LA Talk Radio discussing alternative medicine and the topics in my book A Doctor’s Guide to Alternative Medicine.
